Google Earth

We are experimenting with Google Earth as a tool for visualizing the images from each of the participating schools. Google Earth is a "virtual globe" application that allows you to view and rotate the earth. You can zoom into an area and see very detailed satellite images.
Using Google Earth you can get a much better understanding of the area around each school and see a larger view of features that you see in the camera. For example, in the images from Moose Kerr school in Aklavik, NWT you can see the river in the distance that freezes up in the winter and thaws every spring. In Google Earth you can "fly" to Aklavik and see that the town is in the middle of the McKenzie River Delta and gain a better understanding of the relationship between the town and the river.

To veiw the school images in Google Earth, you will need version 4.0 or greater of the Google Earth Browser which you can download for free from the Google Earth Download Site.

Tips for Viewing Images in Google Earth
- Many images need to load for the timelapse movies, wait a minute or two before playing the timelapse or "flying" to a school.
- Double click the location name in the left hand menu or double click on a school image to "fly" to an individual school.
- Press the triangular "play" button next to the timeline at the top right hand side of the page in Google Earth.
Here is a demonstration of the functionality that was presented at the 2007 American Geophysical Union (AGU) Meeting:
